Collection: Western Australian Mines

Photographed from a doorless Cessna 172 over several Bauxite mines in Western Australia. Bauxite is a sedimentary rock with a relatively high aluminium content, it is the world's main source of aluminium. The vibrant red soil is due to the highly alkaline waste product composed mainly of iron oxide that is generated in the mining process.
